EXT. HART MANOR — DRIVE — LATE AFTERNOON

The sedan glides through the iron gates and up the drive. Magnolia shade gives way to gold late-afternoon light on limestone.

Elle steps out with her shopping bags. Keith collects them from the back seat without being asked.

KEITH

At the front steps, GENEVA waits with a small white box tied in grosgrain ribbon. She has clearly been waiting a while.

GENEVA

Elle slows. Wary. But she climbs the steps.

ELLE

GENEVA

Elle takes the box. She unties the ribbon slowly, like it might bite. Lifts the lid.

Inside: a HART2HART bag in deep crimson leather — sculpted handles, the interlocked H’s stamped in gold at the clasp.

Elle goes still.

GENEVA

ELLE

GENEVA

Elle traces the gold clasp, careful, like the leather might bruise.

GENEVA

Geneva’s voice thins. Her hand rises to her mouth. She laughs and cries at the same time, the way people do when the wound and the healing share a room.

GENEVA

Elle sets the box down on the step. She looks at this woman — this stranger with her mother’s eyes — and something in her chest gives way.

She hugs her. Quick at first. Then Geneva folds around her, and it stops being quick.

Over Geneva’s shoulder, Elle’s face changes. Her eyes shine, but not with joy.

Guilt rises in her like a tide.

She holds on tighter — and we can no longer tell whether it is love, or the weight of what she is doing.
