The study is dim except for the fire and a brass lamp burning beside Geneva.

She sits curled into Roger’s leather chair with an open bottle of wine on the desk. Two empty glasses stand nearby. A third rests loosely in her hand, nearly empty.

A soft knock.

SHARI, a poised member of the household staff, enters.

SHARI

GENEVA

Shari glances at the bottle, then quickly lowers her eyes.

SHARI

GENEVA

Shari stops at the door.

GENEVA

SHARI

Shari leaves. Geneva drains the last of her wine and pours another.

A few minutes later, Keith appears in the doorway. His jacket is buttoned. His posture is perfect.

KEITH

GENEVA

Keith does. He crosses the room and stops several feet from the desk.

GENEVA

KEITH

GENEVA

Keith offers a restrained smile but remains where he is.

KEITH

Geneva studies him over the rim of her glass.

GENEVA

KEITH

GENEVA

Keith says nothing.

GENEVA

KEITH

GENEVA

She gestures toward the empty chair across from her.

GENEVA

KEITH

GENEVA

A beat. Keith finally sits, careful to keep his back straight and his hands folded.

Geneva smiles, satisfied.

GENEVA

KEITH

Geneva’s expression tightens at the thought.

KEITH

GENEVA

KEITH

Geneva leans back, considering him.

GENEVA

KEITH

GENEVA

Keith shifts slightly.

KEITH

GENEVA

Geneva sets down her glass. She moves from behind the desk and settles into the chair opposite him.

Too close.

She crosses one leg, then lets her knees part ever so slightly. Keith’s eyes remain fixed on her face.

GENEVA

Keith’s professional calm flickers.

KEITH

She leans forward.

GENEVA

Keith glances toward the closed door.

GENEVA

KEITH

GENEVA

Her voice is gentle now, but it leaves him nowhere to go.

GENEVA

Keith meets her eyes.

KEITH

Geneva waits.

GENEVA

KEITH

A slow, satisfied smile spreads across Geneva’s face.

GENEVA

Keith rises.

KEITH

GENEVA

Keith nods once and turns toward the door.

GENEVA

He stops without looking back.

GENEVA

KEITH

He exits and closes the door behind him.

Geneva lifts her glass, smiling into the wine.

In the hallway, Keith’s expression changes.

The discomfort disappears. In its place is the same private, knowing grin he wore outside Roger’s bedroom.

He adjusts his cuffs and walks away.
